About John Gardner

John Gardner was an established thriller writer before he became a Bond novelist. His first novel, The Liquidator, introduced Boysie Oakes and was published in 1964, the year Fleming died. Ian Fleming Publications describes that book as a comic response to the spy genre. Gardner also wrote Sherlock Holmes continuation stories and fiction featuring the intelligence officer Herbie Kruger, so Bond was part of a broader career in suspense and espionage.

His Bond sequence began with Licence Renewed in 1981. Across the series he produced 14 original novels and two film novelisations, Licence to Kill and GoldenEye. Those categories matter when deciding what to read: a film novelisation has a different starting point from a new mission devised for the books. Gardner died in 2007, aged 80.
