After scandal and an apparent resignation from the Secret Intelligence Service, Bond offers his skills to the highest bidder. SPECTRE takes an interest in the supposedly disgraced agent. Gaining acceptance means proving loyalty to the very people he has spent his career opposing.

The premise puts Bond's professional identity under pressure. The question is not simply whether he can reach a villain's headquarters, but how far a convincing performance can take him when the demanded proof threatens the world he once served.

Read the first three Gardner novels first for the progression of his Bond. The infiltration premise is self-contained, but the return of SPECTRE makes the earlier books a useful foundation.

Who wrote it

Gardner had created the comic spy Boysie Oakes before the Fleming estate invited him to bring Bond into the 1980s; he later wrote Role of Honour. His run contains fourteen original novels and two film adaptations.
