Read Ian Fleming's fourteen Bond books in the order they were published, starting with Casino Royale (1953) and ending with Octopussy and The Living Daylights (1966).

Bond plays a dangerous baccarat game against a Soviet-linked paymaster in Fleming's first novel. Its casino setting and vulnerable hero make it the natural starting point.

Bond follows smuggled gold from New York to Jamaica in his second novel. Felix Leiter returns, while the book's period portrayals call for care.

A London card game leads Bond to a guarded rocket project on the Kent coast. Fleming's earthbound thriller differs sharply from the later space film.

Five Bond stories take the series through distinct missions and settings. The collection offers shorter entries and supplied titles or scenes for several films.

Stolen nuclear weapons send Bond to the Bahamas in a race against SPECTRE. The novel begins the sequence involving Blofeld that continues in two later books.

Vivienne Michel narrates an unusual Bond story set largely at an isolated American motel. Its voice and plot differ from the film of the same name.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Bond follows Blofeld to a clinic in the Swiss Alps. This middle volume of the Blofeld sequence rewards reading Thunderball first.

You Only Live Twice
Bond travels to Japan in the last Bond novel published during Fleming's life. It concludes threads from the earlier Blofeld books and works best in sequence.

Bond returns to Jamaica on a mission involving the gunman Scaramanga. Published after Fleming's death, the novel follows the Blofeld sequence.

Octopussy and The Living Daylights
This final Bond collection appeared with two stories and later grew to four. Check an edition's contents if you want the complete set.
Why publication order works best
The books do not keep a precise calendar, so there is no reliable "story order" that differs from the order they came out. Reading them as published lets you watch Bond develop and avoids spoiling earlier books by accident.
A Penguin editor writing for the publisher's site also recommends publication order, and points out that From Russia with Love leads straight into Dr. No.
Books that must be read together
Three novels form a sequence about Ernst Stavro Blofeld: Thunderball, On Her Majesty's Secret Service and You Only Live Twice. Read them in that order. The Man with the Golden Gun follows them and works best last.
Where the short stories fit
Keep the two collections in their publication places, eighth and fourteenth. Modern copies of Octopussy and The Living Daylights may contain four stories rather than the original two; our editions guide explains the difference.
What about the prequel?
Anthony Horowitz's Forever and a Day (2018) is set before Casino Royale, but it was written sixty-five years later. On a first read, save it until after Fleming's own books. See continuation novels.
