The story, without spoilers

With Hong Kong's handover to China approaching, a string of violent incidents points Bond towards a major shipping company. A nuclear explosion in Australia, deaths at Portsmouth and an attack in Hong Kong appear connected. Bond's search takes him into the competing interests around a colony about to change hands.

Benson's first original Bond novel uses an identifiable historical turning point as its deadline. The immediate puzzle is the connection between the attacks; the larger pressure comes from a city already facing profound political change.

Can I start here?

Yes. This is the first of Benson's six original novels and the best introduction to his Bond. Knowing Fleming's character is useful, but no earlier Benson mission is needed.

What stands out

The 1997 Hong Kong setting gives the threat a clear historical frame. Choose it to begin Benson's run rather than jumping into his later Union trilogy, which has a more direct continuing enemy.

Benson wrote The James Bond Bedside Companion before becoming the first American commissioned to write Bond; his official work includes Zero Minus Ten. He wrote six original Bond novels and three film novelisations.
