Raymond Benson in the Bond world

Where to begin

Begin with Zero Minus Ten for Benson’s first original Bond novel. His six originals follow publication order. High Time to Kill, Doubleshot and Never Dream of Dying form the Union sequence and work best together. The three film novelisations follow their screen stories. Benson’s later Felix Leiter novel has its own hub.

Reading order

1. Zero Minus Ten (1997)

   With Hong Kong's handover to China approaching, a string of violent incidents points Bond towards a major shipping company. A nuclear explosion in Australia, deaths at Portsmouth and an attack in Hong Kong appear connected.

2. The Facts of Death (1998)

   An assassin leaves numbers as calling cards, and one of the victims is M's lover. Bond follows the case from Texas to Greece, where a fanatical organisation draws on the teachings of Pythagoras.

3. High Time to Kill (1999)

   When a courier’s aircraft crashes on Kangchenjunga, Bond joins a Himalayan climbing expedition to recover a stolen microdot carrying military secrets. The Union is behind the theft, and Bond’s team must contend with altitude, ice and the possibility of an enemy within.

4. Doubleshot (2000)

   The Union wants revenge on Bond and attacks his confidence in his own mind and identity. His pursuit takes him from London to Tangier and Morocco, into a plot connected with Spain and Gibraltar.

5. Never Dream of Dying (2001)

   A film producer provides cover for the Union’s criminal activities, connecting Bond’s investigation of the cinema world with organised crime in Corsica. A movie star becomes caught in the danger as Bond’s continuing conflict with the Union moves towards its conclusion.

6. The Man with the Red Tattoo (2002)

   The killing of a British businessman’s family in Japan draws Bond into an investigation of what appears to be an organised assassination. Japanese agent Reiko Tamura and Tiger Tanaka help uncover a deadly virus threat, with a forthcoming G8 meeting providing an urgent deadline.

Film novelisations, separately

1. Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

   A media organisation stands at the centre of a conspiracy whose consequences could extend far beyond a manufactured newspaper headline. Bond works with Chinese agent Wai Lin to investigate the connection between manipulated news and international conflict in this film novelisation.

2. The World Is Not Enough (1999)

   Bond’s protection of Elektra King draws him into an operation where wealth, revenge and international power converge around valuable oil interests. The threat associated with Renard places personal loyalties beside geopolitical danger in Benson’s prose adaptation of the 1999 film.

3. Die Another Day (2002)

   Bond’s search for a traitor takes him from North Korea to Iceland, with the risk of catastrophic war behind the pursuit. Allies, assassins and questions of revenge shape Benson’s adaptation of the 2002 film, which is separate from his six original Bond novels.

The short stories

The official bibliography also lists Blast From the Past (1996), Midsummer Night’s Doom (1998) and Live at Five (1999). These magazine-length stories are related reading rather than separate book pages.
